ARIEL Theatrical is Honored to Announce a Generous Two-year Grant Award from the Harden Foundation

  The Harden Foundation is dedicated to supporting organizations and encouraging partnerships that benefit the residents of Monterey County. 

Salinas, CA, May 26, 2021 - ARIEL Theatrical is honored to announce a generous two-year grant award from the Harden Foundation. In addition to the financial support, the Harden Foundation Executive Director, Joe Grainger, offered these encouraging words: "We know that nonprofit organizations in our community will be faced with unforeseen challenges in the coming year(s) as they struggle to maintain services while dealing with a deadly pandemic and a reduction in funding sources. We are dedicated to doing everything we can to support and promote the nonprofit sector in our communities."

Everyone’s Harvest Certified Farmers’ Markets Hit New Highs in Getting Healthy Produce to the Community Through its Various Programs

  By the end of this tumultuous year, Everyone’s Harvest Certified Farmers’ Markets will have hit high water marks in getting healthy produce to consumers through its various programs. 

Marina, CA, December 04, 2020 — By the end of this tumultuous year, Everyone’s Harvest Certified Farmers’ Markets will have hit high water marks in getting healthy produce to consumers through its various programs. 

According to Everyone’s Harvest Executive Director Reid Norris, Everyone’s Harvest is on track to distribute more than $175,000 in healthy food through its programs by the end of this year, food grown by local family farmers for the families in the community who need it most. Programs such as Fresh Rx fruit and veggie "prescriptions" from its partner physicians, EBT/Market Match and others, have been a part of that success. 

In addition, 2020 has already been the best year ever for Market Match — a program that doubles spending power at Everyone’s Harvest farmers' markets for CalFresh shoppers. Norris estimates that the CalFresh and Market Match programs will top out at $40,000 by the end of the year. 

In 2020, more than 160 families are receiving a Fresh Rx fruit and veggie "prescriptions" from its partner physicians. Results tracked by doctors show healthy decreases in the majority of participants' BMI, weight, and waist circumference, and healthy lifestyle changes including eating more meals prepared at home. 

“Everyone’s Harvest has been successful this year, and I attribute that to a lot of community support, being designated an essential business, doing things safely and programs that work,” said Norris. “We’ve also been so lucky, none of our people have gotten sick and we’re getting through with a lot of perseverance and a lot of good luck.” 

Norris said that putting health and safety protocols in place at the onset of the pandemic helped Everyone’s Harvest weather the ups and downs of this year. 

“It’s still a safe, fun thing to do these days when there’s not much else to do,” he said about the popularity of Everyone’s Harvest’s five farmers’ markets. “We’re outside and we’ve had safety protocols in place since March.” 

Norris said that there is a holiday break coming up for its farmers' markets in Pacific Grove and Marina, when farmers take a couple weeks off to relax and reinvigorate the soil for the new year. This year, markets will be closed Dec. 27 and 28 and Jan. 3 and 4, 2021.

Monterey County Fair Announces Theme Contest for 2021 Fair

  The Monterey County Fair has announced a contest for the community to come up with a theme for the 2021 Monterey County Fair, which will be held Sept. 2-6, 2021. 

Monterey, CA, October 29, 2020 — The Monterey County Fair has announced a contest for the community to come up with a theme for the 2021 Monterey County Fair, which will be held Sept. 2-6, 2021. 

The deadline to submit a theme idea is Dec. 31, 2020. The winner of the contest will receive $100 and two family ticket packages to the fair. The winner’s theme will be used as the official theme of the 2021 Monterey County Fair and used in Fair promotional materials and campaigns. 

To enter the contest, entrants should print or type their entries on one piece of paper. Each entry must be five words or less and a maximum of three entries per person can be submitted. Please do not use the words Pandemic, COVID or Coronavirus. Think happy thoughts about 2021! 

No entries will be accepted that are the same or similar to other trademarked slogans and/or themes. The last five years of fair themes for reference are: 

2020 – “Fiesta”

 2019 – “High Tides and Carnival Rides”

 2018 – “Shake Your Tail Feathers”

 2017 – “Fair Fun in the Summer of Love”

 2016 – “Celebrate 80!”

Watsonville YMCA to Host Open House on Jan, 25, 2020

Watsonville YMCA will host an open house on Jan. 25, 2020, so the community can try out the Y for free and see what it has to offer.

Salinas, CA, January 23, 2020 — Watsonville YMCA will host an open house on Jan. 25, 2020, so the community can try out the Y for free and see what it has to offer.

The open house will be held from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Jan. 25, 2020, at the Watsonville YMCA Family Center, 27 Sudden Street, Watsonville.

There will be free fitness assessments and orientations during the open house, as well as family arts and crafts, and demo fitness classes from 11:30 am-1 p.m. Demo classes will include Spin, Kidfit, Bootcamp, Kid Zumba, and Zumba classes. Healthy lifestyle information will also be available.

Also, join the YMCA that day and the Y will waive the enrollment fee and give you $50 of Y-Bucks, for a total savings of $100. Present the Y Bucks card for discounts on exercise classes, sports, after-school programs, personal training and more (some restrictions apply). This special offer expires Jan. 31, 2020. Y-Bucks are non-transferable and not redeemable for cash.

Goodwill Central Coast Increases Community impact by Offering 46 new Job Opportunities for 2020

Through education, training and employment services, Goodwill Central Coast helps rebuild lives, families and communities by removing barriers to employment.

Salinas, CA, January 17, 2020 - Each year GCC assists more than 9,000 job seekers get back to work and reclaim financial and personal independence. In addition, Goodwill also provides meaningful work within the nonprofit itself, increasing its community impact by increasing employment. Effectively, GCC has become a job creator within a job creator, employing more than 550 people.

Thanks to community support and generous donations, Goodwill Central Coast has announced 46 new job openings/career opportunities for the new year. These full-time and part-time benefitted positions are available throughout Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Luis Obispo counties.

The 60th Annual Castroville Artichoke Food & Wine Festival Gives Back to the Community through its 12 Charity Partners

The Castroville Artichoke Food & Wine Festival not only provides the community with a wealth of fun and learning every year, it gives back to the community through its dozen charity partners.

Castroville, CA, May 09, 2019 — The Castroville Artichoke Food & Wine Festival not only provides the community with a wealth of fun and learning every year, it gives back to the community through its dozen charity partners.

The 60th annual festival takes place June 1-2, 2019 at the Monterey County Fair & Event Center in Monterey and continues the legacy of celebrating the iconic artichoke and region known as the “Artichoke Center of the World.”

For almost six decades, the Artichoke Festival has been dedicated to informing and exciting festival attendees about the unique qualities of artichokes including farming, harvest, and preparation to demonstrate how the artichoke industry has influenced the history of Monterey County. And now, as a 501c3 organization, the purpose remains the same with an emphasis on giving back to the local community.

“We look forward to the Artichoke Festival each year because the event paints a clear picture of how this community comes together to support one another,” said Diana McClean, senior director of marketing at Ocean Mist Farms and board member for the Castroville Artichoke Food & Wine Festival. “The purpose of this organization aligns directly with Ocean Mist Farms’ values, which is part of the reason we enjoy sponsoring this annual event.”

Proceeds from the festival are used to support 501c3 community organizations and activities that align with the festival’s mission. The following are the 2019 Artichoke Food & Wine Festival Donation Recipient Organizations:

>Ashleigh Nicole Swain Memorial Scholarship Fund
This scholarship fund was set up in the memory of Castroville’s Ashleigh Nicole Swain, 16, a junior at North Monterey County High School, who died in a tragic car accident on Nov. 4, 2011. She was born January 18, 1995 in Salinas, to Jeremiah and Tobi Swain. She was a member of PAL at NMC, was talented in stained glass and jewelry making, and hoped to pursue a career in nursing. >Bikers for Bikes
Founded in 2008 by motorcyclist Rick Jenkins and members of the West Coast/Monterey Bay Harley Davidson Owner’s Group, Bikers for Bikes provides 20-30 new bicycles a year to underprivileged youth. The group is also involved in a Turkey Trot to raise funds and buy turkeys for holiday meals, donates toys to kids during Christmas and participates in other charitable events. North County High School Baseball is heading in the right direction of its old traditions. NMC Baseball teaches young teens the core values of life through the game of baseball while pursuing greatness, sportsmanship and respect. Lifespan Launches a New Service: Well Being Program

In celebration of Lifespan’s 35th anniversary, a free class called “Where is the Joy? Putting Joy Back in your Life as you Age” will be presented on Thursday, June 28th.

Santa Cruz, CA, May 16, 2018 - Lifespan, a specialized aging care agency founded in Santa Cruz County 35 years ago, announces a new service. The Well Being Program recognizes that as people age many become socially isolated, losing the ability to pursue past or new activities that might bring them joy. Often they become disconnected from their community, family, and friends.

Too often social isolation, reduced mobility, or relocation to a new community can diminish access to activities which have brought enjoyment and fulfillment to a person’s life. Lifespan hopes to help local elders reengage and find joy again through its new Well Being Program.

The intent of this program is to increase engagement, sense of fulfillment, connection, and joy in life regardless of age or perceived changes in ability. At the outset a Lifespan professional meets with the elder to explore her or his desires which may include renewing or exploring a creative outlet, connecting with family members or old friends, pursuing a spiritual path, or participating in outings into the community. Once personal goals are identified, a specialized Personal Assistant from Lifespan is matched with the individual and the two can embark on planning activities.

In celebration of Lifespan’s 35th anniversary, a free class called “Where is the Joy? Putting Joy Back in your Life as you Age” will be presented on Thursday, June 28th from 5 pm– 6:30 pm at La Posada Senior Residence, 609 Frederick St., Santa Cruz. Attendees will learn how to create a richer life as they age through reengaging with old passions, exploring new interests, and reconnecting with old friends, family, or new experiences. The featured speaker will be Cathy Cress, MSW, who is a leading national expert in aging life and geriatric care management. Cress is a well-known authority on the baby boomer generation and the aging family. Her book, Handbook in Geriatric Care Management is in its 4th edition. She earned her MSW from UC Berkeley and now consultants on aging issues, including life enrichment.

Lifespan is in full compliance with the 2015 California Home Care Services Consumer Protection Act, under the auspices of the California Department of Social Services, which specifies that all employees meet criteria as registered home care aides. This includes thorough screening, criminal background clearance (fingerprinting) by both the Department of Justice and FBI in addition to verifying initial and ongoing professional training. Employees of all levels are covered by Lifespan’s general liability bond and worker’s compensation policies.

There are more than 2 million professional home care workers in the U.S. providing care and support to aging adults and persons with disabilities in home and community-based settings. The home care workforce has doubled in the past 10 years and the population of those 65 and older is expected to double to 88 million by 2050, making the role of professional aging care professionals that much more critical.

Reisdorf, who founded Carmel Honey Company when he was only 11years old (he’s now 15), is so passionate about honey and especially the need to save honey bees and endangered bee habitat, that he also founded the “Jake Gives Back” program.

The “Jake Gives Back” program not only makes financial donations to honey bee research and education organizations, it involves Reisdorf sharing his honey bee knowledge by speaking to students, service groups, civic organizations, businesses and corporations.

In addition to his speaking engagements, Reisdorf also does pop-up events where he can offer honey tastings, a presentation about bees and honey, as well as Q&A sessions.

Honey bees are a critical to the production of many of the fruits and vegetables we love to eat. In fact, about 90% of US crops depend on honey bees. These social insects also pollinate clover and alfalfa, which are fed to cattle, so they actually support the dairy and meat industry too. In addition, honey bees are also important to cotton and flax crops.

And yet the bees are dying. Pollination beekeepers lost an alarming 44% of their colonies last year due to Colony Collapse Disorder.

With his “Jake Gives Back” program, Reisdorf hopes to raise awareness about this crucial problem and identify solutions to how to reverse the trend.

And now, with the opening of Carmel Honey Company’s first brick-and-mortar store last August at the lower level of the Carmel Plaza in Carmel, Reisdorf is further able to support honey and bee research. When someone purchases a jar of honey or any honey-related product from Carmel Honey Company, either online or at the store, they just contributed to future honey and bee research and education.

In that sense, it’s one of the few products that consumers buy that actually gives back to the community and to the world at large in tangible ways. It can’t be understated how important honey bees are to sustain our global food system.

It’s no different for the 59th Annual Castroville Artichoke Food and Wine Festival, which relies on its many sponsors and hundreds of volunteers to continue its legacy of not only entertaining and educating the community, but directly benefiting charitable and educational nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations in Monterey County.

The 59th Annual Artichoke Food and Wine Festival will be held at the Monterey County Fair and Event Center in Monterey on June 2 and 3, 2018. Festival attendees will enjoy many fresh artichoke food delicacies, a beer, wine and spirits garden, chef demos, live entertainment, field tours and more during the two-day festival.

For many years, the Artichoke Festival has been dedicated to informing and exciting festival attendees about the unique qualities of artichokes, including farming, harvesting, and preparation to demonstrating how the artichoke industry has influenced the history of Monterey County. Now, as a 501c3 organization, the purpose remains the same, with an emphasis on giving back to the local community.

“We look forward to the Artichoke Festival each year because the event paints a clear picture of how this community comes together to support one another,” said Diana McClean, senior director of marketing at Ocean Mist Farms and board member for the Castroville Artichoke Food & Wine Festival. “The purpose of this organization aligns directly with Ocean Mist Farms’ values, which is part of the reason we enjoy sponsoring this annual event.”

Proceeds from the festival are used to support 501c3 community organizations and activities that align with the festival’s mission.
