Monterey Symphony Announces Concert #4, March 14-15, 2020, In Its 2019-2020 Season, Ovation

The Monterey Symphony continues a season of orchestral “greatest hits” under the baton of Burning Man and Bay Area guest conductor for its March concerts.

Monterey, CA, March 27, 2020 — The Monterey Symphony continues a season of orchestral “greatest hits” under the baton of Burning Man and Bay Area guest conductor for its March concerts.

The Monterey Symphony’s March performances are Saturday, March 14 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, March 15 at 3 p.m. at Sunset Center in Carmel. A pre-concert lecture is held one hour prior to the performance each day.

Guest conductor Brad Hogarth joins us for the very first time from the Bay Area where he is the Assistant Professor of Conducting at San Francisco State University, the music director and conductor of both the Contra Costa Wind Symphony and the Art Haus Collective. In August 2017, Brad conducted the Art Haus Collective’s ballet production of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring at the Burning Man in 2017. An estimated 10,000 people were in attendance and photos from the event were featured in USA Today, Business Insider, as well as the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery. Brad has also recently guest conducted a few of Grammy winning composer Mason Bates' Mercury Soul projects, the San Francisco Civic Symphony, the Diablo Symphony Orchestra, the ECHO Chamber Orchestra, the San Francisco Wind Ensemble, the Oakland Municipal Band, and regularly conducts various professions, educational, and community events all over the Bay Area.

Tchaikovsky’s 3rd Symphony, “Polish,” opens the program. This symphony is unique in that it is his only Symphony both in a major key, and containing five movements. Various instruments are showcased in this iconic work, including a lovely flute solo in the third movement.

The second half of the program contains Shostakovich’s 15th Symphony, written in 1971 and premiered in Moscow, which is full of references to other composer’s works. Shostakovich tips his hat to Rossini and Glinka, as well as featuring the “Fate” motif from Richard Wagner’s Ring Cycle.

“The wealth of this (Russian) tradition has made a giant contribution to the history of music,” said Max Bragado-Darman, Monterey Symphony Music Director.

Prior to each concert is a pop-up art exhibit featuring portraits by local photographer Randy Tunnell. Facing Faith is a study of 20 local faith leaders taken over a six month period. The subjects of Tunnell’s works come from various religious backgrounds, including Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Greek Orthodox and more. Prints for this exhibit were sponsored by Pépe International. The exhibit will be available for viewing in the Sunset Center Lobby on Saturday night before the concert and during intermission and on Sunday before the concert.

For more information on the March concerts, the Facing Faith exhibit or to buy tickets, please visit www.montereysymphony.org or call 831-646-8511.

Monterey Symphony’s 2018-19 Season Continues March 16-17 With Concert #4 Featuring Guest Conductor Jung-Ho Pak and Works by Tan Dun, Dmitri Shostakovich, Alan Hovhaness

The sounds of water at play and work highlight the fourth concert of the season for the Monterey Symphony, March 16-17, when Jung-Ho Pak guest conducts the symphony with works by Tan Dun, Dmitri Shostakovich, and Alan Hovhaness.

Monterey, CA, February 24, 2019 — The sounds of water at play and work highlight the fourth concert of the season for the Monterey Symphony, March 16-17, when Jung-Ho Pak guest conducts the symphony with works by Tan Dun, Dmitri Shostakovich, and Alan Hovhaness.

The concerts will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 16 and 3 p.m. Sunday, March 17, 2019, at the Sunset Center, San Carlos Avenue and Ninth Street in Carmel.

Revolutionary experimental composer Tan Dun transposes the sounds of water — at play and at work — into the textures of his music, most literally in Water Concerto for water percussion and orchestra. Christopher S. Lamb is featured on percussion.

The symphonic poem “And God Created Great Whales” by Alan Hovhaness — commissioned in 1970 by the New York Philharmonic — features prerecorded humpback whale vocalizations, and was credited with early efforts to save whales from extinction.

To celebrate the Soviet victory over Germany, Shostakovich was commissioned to write Symphony No. 9, which, Leonard Bernstein described as a series of musical jokes (including purposeful mistakes), completing a boisterous, 99.99% organic, and exciting concert program.

Ticketholders are invited one hour prior to every performance for the symphony’s pre-concert lectures in the Hall of Sunset Center.

Subscriptions are now available. Please contact the box office for availability at (831) 646-8511. For more information and pricing visit: http://www.montereysymphony.org/concerts-events/subscriptions

In addition to the two concerts, there will also be a Symphony Luncheon and Supper Club in March.

Join the Friends of the Monterey Symphony for a preview luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 14th, 2019, at the Beach & Tennis Club at Pebble Beach Resorts. Support classical music, enjoy great food and company, and engage with guest conductor Jung-Ho Pak and guest artist Christopher S. Lamb, from the March concerts.

The luncheon starts with no-host cocktails at 11:30 a.m., followed by luncheon at 12:15 and the guest speaker presentation at 1:15. Cost is $50 per person.

The March Supper Club will be held at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, March 17, 2019, at Anton & Michel, Mission Street between Ocean and Seventh, in Carmel.

Join the Monterey Symphony for a gourmet dinner overlooking the Court of the Fountains at Anton & Michel, ending each Symphony weekend with a sizzling and sumptuous supper for the senses.

Supper Clubs include appetizers and wine upon arrival, followed by a gourmet three-course dinner with several entrees to choose from. Cost is $75 per person.

Bay Area Folk Singer and Her Group to Perform Interactive Children’s Concert on June 22, in Palo Alto

Folk musician Kathy Sherman and her band Hey Mom! will perform a free, family-friendly interactive concert Friday, June 22, at Mitchell Park in Palo Alto.

Los Altos, CA, April 30, 2018 - Folk musician Kathy Sherman and her band Hey Mom! will perform a free, family-friendly interactive concert Friday, June 22, at Mitchell Park in Palo Alto.

Part of the Friday night summer concert series at the Magical Bridge Playground, located at Mitchell Park, 3700 Middlefield Road in Palo Alto, Sherman and Hey Mom! will perform from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Sherman has been a professional folk musician for 44 years and a music teacher for nine. She performs in three different folk bands and has released six recordings.

Her latest release is an 18-song children’s singalong album, “Let’s Sing!” which features such all-time favorite sing-alongs such as “The Hokey Pokey,” “She’ll Be Comin’ ’Round the Mountain,” “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad,” “How Much is That Doggie in the Window,” and “Teddy Bear’s Picnic.”

The album also has an accompanying “Let’s Sing!” songbook, which includes all of the songs on “Let’s Sing!,” as well as selected songs from Hey Mom!’s “Listen to Your Mama” and “Singing on a Star.”

Sherman recently won a Parents' Choice Recommended award for “Let’s Sing,” as well as a glowing review:

“Singer and multi-instrumentalist Kathy Sherman welcomes little ears with her renditions of folk and children's songs, inviting listeners to play and sing along. These 18 tracks include fresh offerings of such traditional fare as ‘I Had a Rooster,’ ‘I've Been Working on the Railroad,’ and ‘She'll Be Comin' 'Round the Mountain,’ as well as Dale Marxon's ‘Waltzing with Bears,’ Peter Alsop's ‘I Am a Pizza,’ Tom Paxton's ‘The Marvelous Toy,’ Tom Chapin and John Forster's ‘Bedtime Round,’ and more. Sherman's happy mix of tunes is made even happier with the voices of her Good Folk Kids singers.”

In addition to Hey Mom!, Sherman is also member of the Good Folk Collective, the Greek folk duo The Plaka Band. She has recorded and released six albums with the three groups.

About Kathy Sherman
Kathy Sherman started her professional music career at age 15, playing Greek music in clubs, restaurants, festivals , and concerts. She put down her bouzouki, the mandolin-like instrument central to modern Greek music, long enough to earn a BMus in classical guitar performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She was a member of the Electric Guitar Quartet, a classical / comedy group that opened for such guitar luminaries as Leo Kottke, Jorma Kaukonen, John Hartford, The Great Guitars (Barney Kessel, Charlie Byrd, and Herb Ellis) and Free Flight.

Kathy’s current music experiences include Greek folk music with long-time friend and fellow musician, Notis Contoplianos in their group, The Plaka Band. Notis and Kathy have two extraordinary CDs, New Songs of Old Athens (selected for Grammy consideration for best World Music Album), and A Time to Sing, A Time to Dance, a rollicking collection of favorite Greek dance music. For more information about The Plaka Band, please check out their website, ThePlakaBand.com. Kathy also plays classical mandolin for orchestras who have the occasional need for one.

About Rebecca Lomnicky and David Brewer:
Rebecca Lomnicky and David Brewer are a high energy pure-drop Scottish music duo, with world class fiddling talent in combination with bagpipes, guitar, bodhran, and whistle. International Scottish Fiddle Champion, Rebecca Lomnicky, and David Brewer of the popular Celtic band Molly's Revenge, have each spent copious amounts of time delving into the traditions of their respective instruments, living and studying in both Edinburgh and the Scottish Highlands. Together they perform captivating Scottish music which bridges the gap between the fiddle and bagpipe music of Scotland, two worlds united, into a heartfelt and rousing musical experience. Between their entertaining and informative stage banter, varied instrument combinations, and vast repertoire of tunes and songs, including everything from soaring slow airs to intricately arranged dance tunes, these charismatic performers will leave you on your feet with your hands together.

Together, Rebecca Lomnicky and David Brewer have headlined at Celtic festivals such as The Utah Scottish Association Highland Games, The Portland Highland Games, The Sedona Celtic Harvest Festival, The Seattle Folklife Festival, The Oregon Scottish Festival, The Yachats Celtic Music Festival, The Monterey Scottish Games and Celtic Festival, The Payson Scottish Games, The Eugene Scottish Festival, and has performed at a variety of venues throughout the United States, United Kingdom, and Ireland.

The duo will be joined by several special guest highland dancers & singers, including Peter "the Admiral" Haworth, former vocalist of Molly's Revenge, from Blackburn, in the north of England.

About Rebecca Lomnicky:
Rebecca Lomnicky began playing classical violin and piano at age five, discovered Scottish fiddle music only a few years later, and in 2005 won the Junior Division of the U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Competition. Following that victory, she recorded her first CD, The Call, praised by Dirty Linen magazine as "technically masterful, and wonderfully melodic." In 2009, Rebecca won the 20th Annual Glenfiddich International Scottish Fiddle Championship held at Blair Castle, Blair Atholl, Scotland. The invitation only championship - seen as the Grammys of the fiddling world- is widely regarded as the most prestigious in Scottish fiddle. She has performed in Scotland, Ireland, Italy, China, and across the US, has been featured on the BBC radio show, Take the Floor, and in 2009, recorded her second CD, Inspired, with David Brewer. In 2014, Rebecca graduated summa cum laude from Cornell University with a double major in Music and Sociocultural Anthropology. She was also awarded the 2013-2014 Ellen Gussman Adelson Prize for outstanding instrumental music performance. For more about Rebecca, please visit: www.rebeccalomnicky.com

About David Brewer:
David Brewer is a multi-instrumentalist who has toured with the Scottish super-group The Old Blind Dogs, and with Molly's Revenge across the US, the UK, Canada, China, and Australia. He has been a special guest of the six-time Grammy winning group The Chieftains, and was a key musician for the soundtrack of the PBS documentary, "Andrew Jackson, Good, Evil, and the Presidency". David, who is known for being animated and engaging on stage, compliments Rebecca's award winning fiddling with guitar, Irish penny-whistle, and bodhran frame-drum, but primarily the Scottish bagpipes, on which he is unarguably one of the most energetic and charismatic performers of the instrument in the world today.
