About The Nutcracker:
Peninsula Ballet Theatre is very pleased to bring its beloved version of The Nutcracker to the Golden State Theatre. “The moment we heard that Eric and Lori Lochtefeld were adding the Golden State to their venues we knew we wanted to be part of this great creative adventure,” said Christine Leslie, President and Executive Director of the ballet company. “We have partnered with them for all four years since they became the owners of the Fox Theatre in Redwood City,” she continued. “We love the charm and the atmosphere of these historic theatres, as do our audiences.”

After making two trips to the Golden State Theatre, the Peninsula Ballet Theatre’s artistic and technical team knew there was no looking back.

“The Golden State Theatre is set up differently than the Fox Theatre so we will be making some slight changes to our choreography to suit the stage size,” said Artistic Director David Fonnegra. “Carlos Carvajal, The Nutcracker choreographer, and I began creating on the spot how to make these changes that will bring the audience closer to the choreography and take advantage of the unique beauty of the venue.”

The Peninsula Ballet Theatre is bringing its entire cast including professionals and student performer from the Company Conservatory. Over 125 costumes characters bring the story of the Nutcracker to life. The technical team arrives on Monday before the performance to begin the transformation to Victorian Scotland. The students portray the friends and family of Clara and Fritz Silverbaum who attend everyone’s favorite holiday party filled with presents, dancing and special entertainments from Dr. Drosselmeyer. Clara’s holiday dreams are fulfilled by dancing by the company’s professional dancers and artists.

Choreographed by Bay Area dance legend and Isadore Duncan Dance Award winner, Carlos Carvajal, this Nutcracker has become a favorite of audiences throughout northern California and is sure to delight audiences in the entire Monterey Peninsula region.

The Company plans on bringing more than just Nutcracker to the Monterey area. Additional Productions will be announced at a future date. “When we have toured this production to Oakland, Pittsburg and Reno we have historically integrated local dance students into the production. We hope to be able to do so for future Nutcracker and other productions,” continued Fonnegra.

“This is a logical progression for a Company that has been delighting audiences for 44 years,” added Leslie. “We are looking forward to being part of this creative adventure in Monterey.”

About Peninsula Ballet Theatre:
Founded in 1967, Peninsula Ballet Theatre is the second oldest professional ballet company in the Bay Area. In 2010, it opened the Peninsula Ballet Theatre Conservatory in 30,000 foot space at 1880 South Grant Street in San Mateo. In that time, it has become an artistic hub with classes in all forms of dance, vocal and acting training as well as a fine art gallery for local artists. David Fonnegra joined Peninsula Ballet in 2013 with the vision of transforming the professional Company into one that reflected the younger, more dynamic nature of its audience base. About the Golden State Theatre:
In 1926, a 15,000 square-foot Moorish castle rose on Alvarado Street, to the amazement of locals and visitors alike. A new cinema and live performance venue to rival those in California's largest cities, the Golden State Theatre , which was built by the Reid Brothers, was the definition of an opulent movie palace. After decades of deterioration, it was faithfully restored to its former glory, featuring an Old World grand lobby and mezzanine, one thousand plush velvet seats, state-of-the-art sound, and the indefinable magic of a truly historic setting. B.B. King, Bill Cosby, Willie Nelson, Yes, Patti Smith, Bob Weir and The Smothers Brothers — these are just some of the names that have graced the stage, contributing to the Theatre's new legacy since its renovation and exciting revival. The community is invited to attend a world-class concert or musical at the Golden State Theatre, or host their own special event here, and become part of its new chapter of history.

The Golden State Theatre is operated by husband and wife entrepreneurs, Eric and Lori Lochtefeld, along with a team of industry professionals from across the country. They are also co-owners of the Fox Theatre in Redwood City, also built by the Reid Brothers in 1929, where they hold nearly 200 events per year. Through their work with the Fox Theatre and the community, they have helped to revitalize downtown Redwood City. For more information, go to www.goldenstatetheatre.com or call (831) 649-1070.

ABOUT THE TEMPTATIONS:
For more than fifty years, The Temptations have prospered, propelling popular music with a series of smash hits, and sold-out performances throughout the world. “The crowds are bigger, the sales are sizzling,” says one industry report. “The outpouring of affection for this super-group has never been greater”. The history of The Temptations is the history of contemporary American pop. An essential component of the original Motown machine, that amazing engine invented by Berry Gordy, The Temps began their musical life in Detroit in the early sixties. It wasn’t until 1964 however, that the Smokey Robinson written-and-produced “The Way You Do the things You Do” turned the guys into stars. An avalanche of hits followed, many of which...”My Girl,” for instance...attained immortality. “It’s Growing,” “Since I Lost My Baby;,” “Get Ready,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “Beauty Is only Skin Deep,” “I Wish It Would Rain”...the hits kept coming.

The classic lineup was Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, Paul Williams, Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin. Beyond the fabulous singing, The temps became known for smooth stepping and flawless presentations. The Temptations Walk became a staple of American style. Flair, flash and class. Millions of fans saw their Temptations as cultural heroes. When the sixties and seventies turned political, The Temps got serious. They changed their tone, dress and music. Producer Norman Whitfield led the way. His Temptations hits, many featuring Dennis Edwards who had replaced David Ruffin, burned with intensity. “Runaway Child” “Cloud Nine,” “I Can’t Get Next to You,” “Papa Was a Rolling Stone”, and “Psychedelic Shack” still smolder.

Other stellar singers...Richard Street, Ali-Ollie Woodson...joined, adding their luster to the groups’ growing fame. No matter the change in personnel, The Temptations remained true to The Temptations tradition. They survived the whims of fashion, whether disco or techno, and stuck to their guns.“Great singing,” says Otis, “will always prevail.”

In the eighties, The Temps prevailed with smashes like the Otis Williams’ penned “Treat Her Like A Lady.”Then in the nineties, another Temptation explosion: It began with their appearance on Motown 25 in 1983; it continued with the NBC mini-series that chronicled the group’s history, a ratings triumph over two nights in prime time. An Emmy Award followed. Then came a series of acclaimed records:

For Lovers Only, a collection of love standards, termed an instant classic by critics, remains among the most cherished of all Temptations recordings.

Phoenix Rising, went through the roof, a platinum-plus mega-hit featuring “Stay,” the Narada Michael Walden produced song that topped the charts.

Ear Resistible nailed a Grammy and a legion of new fans.

Awesome, released in 2001 is The Temptations at their freshest, strongest, and most appealing.

Reflections was released in 2005, nominated for a Grammy and brought to the world The Temptations versions of some of Motown’s greatest songs.

The current Temptations lineup consists of:
Otis Williams, Ron Tyson, Terry Weeks, Joe Herndon, Bruce Williamson

“The more we change,” says veteran Ron Tyson, “the more we stay true to ourselves. We’re about singing straight-up soul. It’s a style that will live on forever.”

“The Temps have always been known for great lead singers”, says Williams. “Today we have three of the greatest leads in the proud history of the group.”

The soaring voice of Ron Tyson, perhaps the best high tenor in the business.

Terry Weeks, who grew up in Alabama and spent eight years in the Air Force before his makeshift audition for Otis on a Hollywood street corner, whose smooth textures and tones, express an extraordinary full range of feelings.

Newest member, Bruce Williamson started singing in a church choir at the ripe age of 5 years old and hasn’t stop since. He has sung in everything from commercials to musical to the top showrooms in Las Vegas. Bruce was introduced to Otis by Ron Tyson.

“Our challenge,” says Williams, “is to live in the present while respecting the past. Our past is filled with riches only a fool would discard. At the same time, we thrive on competition. As a Motowner, I grew up in the most competitive musical atmosphere imaginable. But we also understand that for a group with history, no matter how glorious that history might be, reinvention is the name of the game.”

“When I tell people we are God’s group,” says Otis, a remarkable modest man, “I don’t mean it arrogantly. It’s just that we have been tested time and again and keep coming back. We have suffered the death of so many legendary singers...Paul Williams, David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Melvin Franklin. Others like Dennis Edwards, Richard Street, Ali-Ollie Woodson and Theo Peoples have left, and yet our unity is tighter, our sound brighter and our popularity greater. Someone has watched over this group. Someone has protected our integrity. Someone has said...just go on singing and it’ll get better.”

And so THE TEMPTATIONS go on.......and on.....and on........

Broadway By the Bay’s DREAMGIRLS at the Fox Theatre in Redwood City recommended by Prestigious Theater Bay Area (TBA)

Music by Henry Krieger & Book and Lyrics by Tom Eyen

Redwood City, CA, August 20, 2014 - The sensational musical DREAMGIRLS runs from August 15th through 31st at the historic Fox Theatre in Redwood City, 2215 Broadway Street, Redwood City, CA, 94063 (650) 369-7770 www.foxrwc.com.

Garnering great reviews (“it boasts a strong visual style and some outstanding vocal performances” – SF Examiner), DREAMGIRLS recently received a recommendation from Theater Bay Area (TBA), a nonprofit theater support organization that provides services for over 300 member theater companies in the SF Bay Area.

Broadway By the Bay has also selected the Fox Theatre in Redwood City for its future performances.

Based upon the aspirations and successes of R&B acts such as The Supremes and The Shirelles, the musical DREAMGIRLS follows a young trio of Motown singers from Chicago, Illinois as they catch their big break and start singing for James “Thunder” Early. Things begin to spin out of control when their agent, Curtis Taylor Jr., makes Deena and not Effie, the star of what will become known as “The Dreams.”

DREAMGIRLS opened at the Imperial Theatre on December 20, 1981 and won six Tony Awards, including Best Choreography and Best Leading Actress. It was later adapted into a major motion picture in 2006.

“It is my absolute pleasure to bring this show to the BBBay stage and to the larger Bay Area community” says Director, Angela Farr Schiller. “Dreamgirls has not been produced locally by a Bay Area theatre company in more than a decade, which makes this particular theatrical event even more special to be apart of…Dreamgirls is a universal show told through the specific experiences of the African American community deep in the midst of the American Civil Rights Movement. A time period in the early 60s to late 70s, where, as an African American, to be considered a fully human being was indeed only a dream and to believe in oneself as both black and with value was radical. Dreamgirls reflects not only the change happening within black America but in the U.S. as a whole during this period. It is a coming of age tale both for the Dreams and the country. Ultimately, Dreamgirls is about the magic that the theatre has for transformation and possibility across social and political boundaries if we only believe.”

Angela received her B.A. in theatre from the University of California, Santa Cruz, where she completed her final year of study at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. She has also studied at the University of Ghana at Legon, Accra and the University degli Studi di Siena, Italy. As a performer, she has appeared onstage with the National Dance Company of Ghana, the Tony Award winning Old Globe Theatre and the La Jolla Playhouse. Angela received her Master’s Degree in Africana Studies from New York University. She co-wrote and directed an
original work, The Knot, which premiered at Stanford in 2011. Angela has also performed and toured with Stanford Summer Theatre’s production of The Wanderings of Odysseus in Athens, Greece. Recently, she directed an adaptation of Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye for Stanford’s 2013-2014 main stage season.

About the Fox Theatre:
Located in the heart of downtown Redwood City, the Fox Theatre is the premier live entertainment and rental venue in Silicon Valley. Downtown Redwood City has over 60 dining options within walking distance of the Fox for pre or post-event dining. The capacity of the Fox Theatre is 1,348 amongst its three floors. Club Fox capacity is 240 and is right next door to the Fox Theatre, allowing for endless possibilities for public or private events. They also have the ability to book the Courthouse Plaza directly across the street from the Fox, providing open air or tented event experiences for 500 to 1000.

History:
The Fox Theatre opened its door to the public on January 2, 1929 as The New Sequoia Theater by Ellis John Arkursh to show motion pictures. Touring Europe, Arkush gathered all of his favorite architectural details from various venues to create the Moorish feel and style on the inside and the gothic feel on the exterior which was executed beautifully by the Reid Brothers of San Francisco.

Used mainly for motion pictures the theater was purchased by the Fox West Coast Chain only a few months after the opening and it continued to be used for movie attractions for a number of years until the theater was closed for renovations in June of 1950 for 4 months before re-opening its doors September of 1950 for live performances and shows.

After its renovations the theater became a popular venue for many incredible artists such as Vanessa Williams, Etta James, Bill Cosby, Neil Young, Melissa Ethridge, BB King and many others.

In 1993, the theater was inducted into the National Register of Historic Places and it is now getting ready for a Grand Re-opening to continue the legacy of the Fox Theatres and to bring life back to Redwood City. In 2009 the theater went dark and now in 2010 the doors will once again open to bring it back to life.

In the summer of 2010, the Fox Theatre Redwood City was purchased by local entrepreneurs Eric Lochtefeld and Lori Lochtefeld. Eric Lochtefeld had a dream of one day owning an entertainment venue like the Fox and Lori has a dream of helping downtown Redwood City reach its full potential on the real estate front.

Since the Lochtefelds re-opened the Fox Theatre and Club Fox in September 2010, the entire Theatre District that is downtown Redwood City, has experienced a renaissance. Downtown Redwood City is now arguably the most happening entertainment mecca in between San Francisco and San Jose. The Fox Theatre is successfully booking its venue for over 100 public and private events per year, drawing over 100,000 patrons. Club Fox has experienced similar success in hosting 100 to 150 public shows per year to well over 25,000 patrons. The Lochtefelds, with the strong backing of the community and city officials, have successfully completed many major renovations to make the Fox Theatre even impressive than it already was when they took over.
